Neckties, once the Father's Day gift nonpareil, loosen their grip
Neckties were once the undisputed king of Father’s Day gifts.
Now? Knot so much.
“When I started, you’d see a wife or girlfriend come in and select a tie as a gift,” said Andrew White, tie buyer and salesman at La Jolla’s Ascot Shop. “Now, bam! All of sudden, no one is wearing ties.”
Ties are still available, of course. You can find $7.99 no-name rayon numbers as well as $289 designer-crafted silk extravagances. Across the nation, though, there are signs that this staple of men’s business attire is losing its half Windsor hold on Father’s Day.
